PERSONAL NOTE FOR JEFF: Dwarves....
Do NOT have infravision. They can see somewhat better in the dark than humans, but still need light to see.
Dwarves do have an intuitive sense of where they are, above or underground. They can detect sloping corridors, illusion tricks to confuse the eye and the like more often than not. They also have a instinctive feel for stonework, digging, and gem evaluation.
Dwarves love Mitheral. By the way, you have noticed that Tanaka's armor and sword are a Mitheral alloy.
Dwarves do not like tall things, like trees and elves.
Dwarves are clan based, like Indian tribes. They tend to be more attached to the tribe than immediate family (and, in fact, large creches where the Dwarf children are raised are much more common than atomic families in a Dwarven tribe). Dwarvish names are "tribe member-of name." So, Glorm might be Nagra Brun Glorm (Glorm, member of Nagra tribe). Dwarvish tribes have reached the tens of thousands in the past, but now low birth rates have left many tribes shadows of their former selves, down to the thousands, sometimes hundreds. Glorm's tribe numbered about five thousand. Warfare between tribes is almost non-existent now, since shrinking populations have resulted in more space in the ancient caves than people to fill them. Many tribes have walled off huge sections of the old complexes. Occasional battle between individual dwarves can occur over gems and the like.
PERSONAL NOTE FOR ALLISON:
Elves really do fall into two groups, the introverts and extroverts (this doesn't mean that individual elves don't have individual agendas, however). The introverts are recessionists; they would like nothing more than to pull back every elf into the Evael, close off the borders, and ignore the rest of the world (the more extreme factions would only maintain enough of a presence abroad to keep all the other races at each other's throats, in an attempt to maintain elvish technical [magical] superiority). The extroverts believe that there is no way to hide your head in the sand, and that the elves have a stake in helping the younger races (Human, Troll, Urakai, Urakou, Centaur) mature (again, there are more extreme factions that believe that they should more than help the younger races mature, but pick a successor race, and train them in elvish magic).
The extroverts have held sway until recently. The leader extrovert, who was a moderate, was named Hotherial, and was in charge of external affairs for the elves. Most ambassadors and other elves external to Evael are extroverts picked by Hotherial. He also had a wide intelligence gather network. But six months ago, the first group of non-elves since the great fall 500 or so years ago was allowed into the Evael under a plan of Hotherials. The goal was to gather one of twelve great swords, God Slayer, in return for returning an ancient dragon named Veskavar to his home via some interdimensional portals known as "World Gates." The plan went awry, however, when Veskavar turned on the Elves at the Evael Worldgate and used it instead to port in a large family of red dragons. God Slayer disappeared along with the part of non-humans with the aid of a renegade elf named Ziwa.
The end result is that Hotherial was disgraced, and has been removed from power. He went on a Welsispan, a quest, about three months ago and hasn't been heard from since. His replacement is a true moderate, neither a intro or extrovert. Now the Intro and Extroverts are roughly equal in power.
Hotherial had a fondness for humans, and most of the ambassadors to Kethem (as well as Kanday and Pranan) reflect that fondness.
Finally, on a unrelated subject, elves share a natural mental telepathy (the mind meld). It gives them great power; they can act like a single intelligence in small groups, making their military very difficult to beat (almost unbeatable in the forest, since they can hold a line in the most visibility-restricted terrain). It is also something of a weakness, in that it provides a line of attack that can affect large numbers of elves simultaneously. The elves know this, and have taken precautions against it. That is why the Evael is off limits to non-elves. The only place where you can meet large numbers of elves as a non-elf is Lentella Holden, the place of silence. It is a small island off the coast of the Evael forest with a magic field that dampens Elvish telepathy, and the only point of commerce with the outside world.
