Vodan Cleric
You are a Kethem Naval Intelligence (KNI) lower level spy. KNI has noted a
number of irritating coincidences / problems surrounding the player characters,
not the least of which is the snatching of the STAM crystal from under their
noses. You have been told to infiltrate the group, to find something to use
against them, and to bring them to trial in Kethem.
You have your own agenda, however. Your last assignment was tracking down some
black marketers who were trading with the trolls. They were based in Nol, using
the overland route (through the mountains separating Tawhiem from the Troll
lands). You were supposed to shadow them, find out who they were, then set them
up for arrest in Nol.
You did shadow the group, but they were attacked in the mountains by a group of
Kirander and wiped out to the last man. You watched the Kirander pick over the
bodies, then toss them in a convenient ravine. After the tribesmen left, you
went in for a closer look.
The bodies were clean of any valuables except... the Kirander had missed a ring!
It was of odd design, a wyvern biting its own tail, but it looked like gold. You
slipped it off the finger of the dead man and put it on yours. A sudden chill
took you, and you quickly tried to pull the ring off. It wouldn't come off.
Analysis back in Kethem showed it to be a cursed ring. The exact nature of the
curse was unknown. Your sleep has been troubled since then. Each night, you have
the same nightmare. A pallid, corpse-like human is looking at you and laughing
with a voice from the grave. "Foolish mortal", the figure says, "you are mine,
now. When you die, you soul will be forever stripped from this shell of a body,
and my power with fill the void. You will dance to my tune, human".
You begged your superior to provide support to you so you could try to track
down where it had come from and how to get rid of it. He looked you up and down.
"That has nothing to do with the security of Kethem. Now get back to work." You
decided that perhaps the KNI was not the career path you wanted after all.
Your hope is to try to find out something about the ring in Nol. What you do
about the KNI is up to you.
