Seattle was a business-trip-turned-vacationee. Dave was there for a
conference, and Alison flew up from LA to stay for most of the trip.
Seattle turned out to be pretty awesome. It has, of course, the iconic
space needle with panoramic views. It has the Pike Public Market, a sort
of combination farmer's market and flea market, with a variety of unique
shops such as antique dealers, comic book and collectible shops, small
family-owned restaurants, and one of the oldest head shops in Seattle.
It has the Columbia Center, a 76 story, 937 foot tall building, the
tallest in the state of Washington.
It has the Museum of Pop Culture (aka the Experience Music Project or
EMP), which was architecturally interesting and seemed to be a science
fiction, movie, and music video euphorium.
And it has the Chihuly Garden and Glass museum, which Dave had never
heard of but Alison wanted to see. It turned out to be the most
interesting place we visited during the trip. Part of that was how
diverse Chihuly's work was during his career.
Dave stayed for a couple of days to visit Mount Rainier and the
associated national park, hiking from the Henry Jackson Visitor Center
just high enough to realize that were only gong to get views of the
clouds socking in the mountain. Instead, we stopped at a local ski
resort who had a gondola running and hand lunch at the top (with some
little furry friends) where we could see the top of Rainier through the
clouds.
