Maine 2023

The last week of September, we went up to visit Rick and Elizabeth in their new home on 26 acres of oceanfront property (although we stayed in the cottage on the family camp site, it was only a 7 minute drive to the new house). It was a bit later in the season than our typical trip, so a touch cooler, with mist on the pond some mornings.

Some mornings it was so clear, the lake like glass, that it was hard to pick the real sky out from the reflection on the water. Other days, the sun was struggling to burn through the overcast.

The dogs loved the new property (and the camp) and enjoyed running around free with their mate Gigi.

The cat, not so much, although he started to settle down a bit when we let him outside.

We did the traditional cruise around the pond with Aviations for most evenings. Bald eagles, Ospreys, ducks and other water fowl were in abundance.

There was an ongoing joke about Great Blue Herons, because someone had done a bird count on Rick and Elizabeth's new property and spotted fourteen. We saw one, and it was distant enough that even the 600mm lens wasn't enough to get a great shot. But we did see a number of other birds.

We did a moderate hike in Acadia National Park (the mainland side, not the island) that we did five years ago, and it's clear there's some seismic activity on the Schoodic peninsula because the climbs were much steeper and longer than they were back then. We followed the Anvil trail to Schoodic Head, took that to the Alder, which took us back to Blueberry Hill where we parked the car. For this hike, we left the hounds behind, knowing we would have some fairly treacherous terrain to cover, but we brought Zuzu and Elizabeth brought Gigi.

We did a drive around some of the more scenic shoreline areas as well (this time, with the hounds, which made even the easier trails challenging)

There were dinners out, sometimes with Rick's mom Sandy and her friend Sue, and taking photos of they flying by on a sightseeing tour of Jone's Pond (a gift from Rick and Elizabeth).  And there was hanging out with Elizabeth and watching Rick driving his tractor, aka "his happy place."
